چکیده

Laboratory measurements of the absorption coefficient and refractive index of solid CO2 are reviewed for all parts of the electromagnetic spectrum from the ultraviolet to the microwave with emphasis on values for temperatures above 77 K. The available measurements in some cases require reinterpretation. A compilation of the spectral absorption coefficient kabs is made for 52-nm to 160-nm wavelength (with some gaps because of lack of data), and the complex refractive index is then computed by Kramers-Kronig analysis. The uncertainty in imaginary refractive index is discussed; it varies greatly with wavelength. The real part of the refractive index is close to 1.4 for all parts of the spectrum except near strong absorption bands and is accurate to +0.05 outside those bands. No measurements of absorption are available for 180-330-nm, 1.02 . -,um, and 25-,um-25-mm wavelength, except in the strong narrow absorption lines. Remeasurement of kab, is also needed for parts of the IR spectrum between 2.5 and 25 um because of experimental error in the available measurements.

Detection of the “ 44 μ m ” band of water ice in absorption in combined ISO SWS - LWS spectra ?

We report the detection of the transverse optical vibrational band of water ice at 44 μm in absorption towards two embedded infrared sources, IRAS 18316–0602 (RAFGL7009S) and IRAS 19110+1045. The water band extending from 30 to about 80 μm is a prominent feature in the combined ISO SWS and LWS grating spectra. Using new optical constants for amorphous and crystalline water ice, we have modeled ...

Experimental evidence for carbonate precipitation and CO2 degassing during sea ice formation

Chemical and stable carbon isotopic modifications during the freezing of artificial seawater were measured in four 4 m tank incubations. Three of the four incubations were inoculated with a nonaxenic Antarctic diatom culture. The 18 days of freezing resulted in 25 to 27 cm thick ice sheets overlying the residual seawater. The ice phase was characterized by a decrease in temperature from 1.9 to ...

Variation in Baiting Intensity Among CO2-Baited Traps Used to Collect Hematophagous Arthropods

Hematophagous arthropods transmit the etiological agents of numerous diseases and as a result are frequently the targets of sampling to characterize vector and pathogen populations. Arguably, the most commonly used sampling approach involves traps baited with carbon dioxide. We report results of a laboratory study in which the performance of carbon dioxide-baited traps was evaluated using measu...

A sublimation model for martian south polar ice features.

In their pioneering work, Leighton and Murray argued that the Mars atmosphere, which at present is 95% carbon dioxide, is controlled by vapor equilibrium with a much larger polar reservoir of solid carbon dioxide. Here we argue that the polar reservoir is small and cannot function as a long-term buffer to the more massive atmosphere. Our work is based on modeling of the circular depressions com...

The 100,000-year ice-Age cycle identified and found to lag temperature, carbon dioxide, and orbital eccentricity

The deep-sea sediment oxygen isotopic composition (delta(18)O) record is dominated by a 100,000-year cyclicity that is universally interpreted as the main ice-age rhythm. Here, the ice volume component of this delta(18)O signal was extracted by using the record of delta(18)O in atmospheric oxygen trapped in Antarctic ice at Vostok, precisely orbitally tuned. The benthic marine delta(18)O record...
